An Extraordinary New Neighbor at Black Bear Falls.
Residents of Black Bear Falls have reported sighting an unusual new neighbor in the National Park buffer zone adjacent to their community: a bull elk, apparently part of a herd of 52 elk experimentally released by the National Parks Service in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2001 and 2002.

Elk were once native to the southern Appalachians, but over-hunting and loss of habitat forced them from the region. To preserve indigenous species, the National Parks Service occasionally reintroduces native animals. In addition to elk, the peregrine falcon, river otter and a few species of small fish have also been successfully reintroduced into the region.

You’re most likely to spot your new neighbor in the mornings and evenings, on cloudy days, or just before a storm. Elks have been known to charge when startled or provoked, so the safest way to get acquainted with your new neighbor is from a distance, with binoculars. For his own safety and survival, resist the temptation to leave snacks for him; he prefers to find his own plants and nuts. Bull elks shed their antlers in March, and most elk calves are born in June. The elk spotted at Black Bear Falls wears a collar and is likely one of the original 52 who were introduced into the Great Smokies by the National Parks Service.

With his sweet nose, gentle eyes and impressive size, the elk at Black Bear Falls is a welcome addition to the native North Carolina wildlife.
